Our Eco-Homes

The UK's construction industry produces approximately 100,000,000 tonnes of waste each year.

We have to change that.

We need to show that the new technology works, as no-one has to date put Passivhaus style insulation into a shipping container (confirmed by the Passivhaus Institute).
We also need to fine-tune the MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery) pump, solar panels and appliances & fittings.

Exciting News!

Currently we have generated a massive 90kW since Jan 28th - meaning the house is paying for itself and exporting energy to the South Yorkshire Energy Centre too.

Why Containers?

Containers themselves have only been around since 1956, when an enterprising US truck driver named Malcolm McLean invented them in his lunch break and revolutionised international transport. The first homes didn't appear until the late 70's so no-one really knows how long they will last - and still perform well and look good. Like Malcolm, we want to change the world first and then see where we end up!

Containers are great for community eco-homes - they already have a sealed envelope (meaning air flow can be regulated), they're easy to build with and require little experience, and they are upcycled after their traditional end of life as cargo transport!

Container Homes

Container homes are still a rarity in the Uk. There are a few, of which probably the best known are at Container City opposite the O2 Arena in London's Docklands and BoxPark in Croyden. Other examples are Richardson's Yard in Brighton and Raynes Court in Stoke Newington, where flats are on the market for up to £620,000 - so when asked if there is a resale value that's the example we always quote!
